The first time I saw hoop was in my undergrad standard. My mom gifted me a hoop because I was fat and she thought hooping helps me shed some extra fat. I was very much interested to learn and I started trying to hoop around my hip. Drop! Drop! Drop!. Yet I was having good ab exercise picking up from ground lol. I tried my best for a week and the hoop has found its place on the attic.
My second encounter with the hoop is at a music concert and I was 26 by then. I saw a girl performing with hoop and I wished I could do that and you know what someone left their hoop in the concert and I took it home and started trying it. Drop! Drop! Drop!. Now I decided that hooping is a serious skill and it takes a lot to learn it. Now the hoop found its place in a corner in my bedroom. But my interest in learning it kept growing.
It is the new Year 2018. I wanted to prove something to myself that I can learn things on my own and I realized hooping would be the best thing to start with and decided that I am not going to give up hooping without learning it. This time watched a bunch of videos on youtube and I noticed something important. There were not a lot of videos for hip hooping. Then, I realized that it must be something easy to learn and I started reading some articles on the internet, and everyone is banging on only one point RIGHT HOOP SIZE. The ideal hoop size should come to your belly button from your feet. Then I went to check my hoop size and lol, it was coming till my knees. I have been wasting my time on wrong hoop whole time. Apparently smaller hoops are good for doing the other tricks with hands and stuff but not for waist hooping. This time I decided to spend some money on hooping and checked on amazon.com, to my surprise they are around $17 to $25. I saw small hoops for a dollar in dollar-store and I was reluctant to spend that much money on the hoop. (discussion in my mind with myself. " Buying hoop is not just wasting money. It is all about learning a skill with the right one and spending $25 on a skill is very cheap). Now I decided to buy it. Weighted hula hoop with the right size is the best thing to start with as you have more control and more feel on your body. And you know what I learned to keep on the waist in just 2 days.
This is the one I started with.

The logic behind using big hoops is that it takes more time to make a circle and you have ample amount of time to move your hip. With the smaller hoops, the amount of time for it to make a circle is very less and you don't have enough time to keep it moving. In order to keep the small hoop moving you need to be really fast and not all humans can do it ;).
My DIY Hula Hoop cost me just $6. Yes, you heard it right. Go to homedepot, Look for polypro tubes of 10' in length and get a tube connector and connect the ends together and you can start hooping from the store itself :D.
Happy Hula Hopping.
